Some poetry does not rush toward explanation. Instead, it lingers in quiet moments, allowing meaning to unfold gradually. In A Map Without Names, Parekhit Bhattacharjee presents a contemplative collection that invites readers to slow down and notice the spaces they move through, both around them and within. The book has been recognized with the 21st Century Emily Dickinson Award, conferred by BookLeaf Publishing as part of its annual literary honors celebrating emerging and contemporary voices in poetry, marking it as a noteworthy contribution to modern poetic expression.

Comprising twenty-one poems, the collection moves gently through rooms, objects, thresholds, and open spaces. Rather than telling a linear story, the poems focus on simple observations that gradually reveal deeper emotional landscapes. Through restrained language and careful attention to stillness, Bhattacharjee allows meaning to surface naturally, encouraging readers to pause and reflect rather than search for immediate answers.

The inspiration behind A Map Without Names grew from the author’s habit of paying attention to ordinary surroundings. Everyday environments became quiet reflections of inner experience, revealing how the spaces we inhabit often mirror the states of mind we carry.

“The poems began with paying attention to ordinary spaces and objects,” Bhattacharjee explains. “Over time, I became interested in how meaning can emerge from stillness and observation rather than explanation. The book attempts to trace a quiet map within us, without trying to name every place along the way.”

Bhattacharjee’s creative perspective is shaped by his engagement with several artistic disciplines. Alongside writing, he works with sound as a DJ and electronic music producer and with visual framing as an amateur photographer. His experiences as a traveller and communications professional also influence his approach, bringing together rhythm, silence, clarity, and thoughtful observation within his work.

These varied creative practices subtly inform the structure of the poems, where pacing, atmosphere, and attention to detail play an important role. Much like music or photography, the poems rely on timing and space, creating moments where readers can pause and connect with the quiet insights unfolding within each piece.

In A Map Without Names, Bhattacharjee offers readers an experience rather than a set of interpretations. The poems do not instruct or define. Instead, they create an environment where recognition emerges through stillness, allowing readers to discover familiar emotions in unexpected places.

Through this reflective approach, the collection reminds us that not every journey requires clear directions. Sometimes the most meaningful paths are the ones we trace quietly, guided by attention and awareness rather than certainty.
