Togo Celebrates Independence Day in Chennai

The High Commission of Togo in India organized two events, “India-Togo Business Forum” and “Reception for the 65th Independence Day” on 08th May 2025 at Chennai.

Togo gained its independence on 27th April 1960. This year H.E. Mr. Yawo Edem AKPEMADO, Chargé d’Affaires, High Commission of Togo decided to celebrate in Chennai as it is a very important city of India. India-Togo Business Forum was attended by more than one hundred of the prominent business persons of Tamil Nadu. Mr. Akpemado highlighted the business environment of Togo and encouraged the Indian businesses to trade with and invest in Togo. He said that Indian businesses can target more than 350 million people in ECOWAS countries by setting up in Togo.  The engaging question answer session demonstrated the enthusiasm of the business persons about Togo. Mr. Naveen Sharma, President of Indo Togo Cooperation Forum shared his personal examples of the successes of Indian businesses in Togo.

The business forum was followed by the Reception for the 65th Independence Day of Republic of Togo. The Chief Guest was Dr. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, Minister of Information Technology and Digital Services of Tamil Nadu. Dr. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan spoke highly about similarities between India and Togo including freedom struggle and diversity. The reception was attended by more than one hundred fifty of the prominent residents of Tamil Nadu including more than twenty Honorary Consuls.

Republic of Togo, situated in West Africa, is a nation characterized by its cultural diversity and historical significance. Bordered by Ghana to the west and Benin to the east, Togo covers an area of approximately 56,600 square kilometers. Its geographical features range from sandy beaches along the Gulf of Guinea to fertile plains and hilly terrain further inland. With a population of over 8 million people, Togo’s capital city, Lomé, serves as both its political and economic center. The country’s GDP PPP is around $25.1 billion (2023 estimate). The economy is primarily driven by agriculture, with key exports including coffee, cocoa, and cotton, contributing to its GDP of around $5 billion. India is one of its major trading partners. Port of Lomé is highly modern and caters to many countries. India and Togo engage in cooperation under the framework of the International Solar Alliance, co-chaired by India and France of which Togo is a Founding Member, since its inception in 2018.
