All beginnings start with a step in the first place — and for JD School of Design, Goa’s new batch of 2025, orientation was that thrilling start. With aspirations in their eyes and curiosity in their hearts, the new batch of Fashion Design and Interior Design students assembled on campus, embarking on a journey where there are no boundaries to imagination.

The orientation session, held in the vibrant auditorium of Goa, was a welcoming function that set the tone for things to come. Meant to be informative and at the same time, inspiring, the session introduced students to the culture, ethos, and value system of JD School of Design and gave them a glimpse of what awaits a design student.

Setting the Stage for Creativity

The day started with a traditional welcome ceremony, followed by an emotional speech by the founder, Mr. Nealesh Dalal and vice principal, Dr. Anusuya, where they touched upon the role of design in determining the future, from eco-friendly fashion to practical interior spaces that set the tone for contemporary living. The message was loud and clear: at JD School of Design, students are not merely instructed to catch up with trends, but to emerge as trendsetters, thinkers, and problem-solvers.

Then there were the faculty introductions, in which students were introduced to their mentors for the next few years. The career journeys of each of the faculty members were described, and with them came to the students the application of design to the real world. It was inspiring to learn of the diverse backgrounds and global experience that the faculty as teachers have to share.

Understanding the Design Culture

The students were guided through the academic curriculum, studio, project needs, and internships. The Fashion Design students were interested in learning about upcoming workshops in draping, textile construction, and fashion illustration. The Interior Design students were interested in starting their education in spatial design, materials, and the fundamentals of architecture.

The orientation also placed a great emphasis on multidisciplinarity. In the JD School of Design, streams aren’t segregated — interior students and fashion students work together quite often on projects, influencing each other and learning from each other.

To ensure that the students were comfortable, the day ended with relaxed activities and a campus tour. From the fashion labs to the design studios, campus buzz was infectious. Students took selfies, made new friends, and started making the creative connections that will shape their college years.

The Orientation Day was community-building. The JD School of Design, Goa, takes pride in crafting an ethos of respecting experimentation, respect, and growth. For the class of 2025, this was the initiation into that space.

As they start their very first semester, these young designers have with them a mix of nervous expectation and big dreams. In the right direction, with the right support, and with the right motivation, little doubt that they would be creating ripples in both the fashion and interiors domains soon.
