KolkataFish: Bringing the Soul of the Fish Market to Your Doorstep

Kolkata, (West Bengal), [India], May 15, 2025: In Bengal, fish is considered more than just food; it’s a legacy that is passed down through generations. It is a ritual that begins early in the morning with a trip to the bustling market, and an emotion that ties families together over shared meals. As digital convenience is taking over and the city life is getting busier, the connection with fresh, local produce has started to fade. But for many fish lovers, the desire for quality and trust in what goes on the plate remains as strong as ever.

In April 2019, two friends and professionals, Rajib Paul and Abhijit Das, decided to do something about it. Both came from a Chemical Engineering background but had very different experiences that complemented each other. Abhijit grew up around the traditional fish trade, gaining deep insights into customer preferences, freshness standards, and the unspoken language of the local market. Rajib, always drawn to e-commerce and tech innovation, believed in creating solutions that merged heritage with convenience.

Their idea took shape when they launched kolkatafish.com in December 2020. At the time, many households were rethinking how they bought food, especially during the push for contactless deliveries. With just a few pin codes in service, the platform began by prioritizing consistency, hygiene, and a sense of familiarity. Orders were packed with care, deliveries were timely, and the focus remained on making the online buying experience feel as personal and reliable as a trusted fish seller from the neighborhood.

Today, KolkataFish delivers across Kolkata and parts of Howrah and has completed more than 10,000 orders. Customers often highlight the clean cuts, fresh smell, and helpful service team, along with the packaging that speaks of quality without the frills. A solid 4.6-star Google rating stands as proof of the trust the brand has earned in just a few years.

The menu has grown steadily and now includes a wide variety of fish, chicken, mutton, and ready-to-cook options. Each product is handled with attention to detail, reflecting the founders’ commitment to freshness without compromise. There’s also a time-saving element appreciated by working professionals and home cooks alike—cleaned, pan-ready products that arrive at your door, skipping the mess and hassle.

To further connect with communities, the team recently hosted awareness events across multiple residential complexes. These sessions weren’t just about showcasing products. They allowed people to see the freshness up close, ask questions, and understand sourcing and hygiene practices. As Rajib shared, “We wanted to create a space where people could touch, see, and understand the freshness we promise online. It wasn’t just about selling; it was about starting a conversation around quality, tradition, and convenience.”

Future plans of Kolkata fish is to expand to new areas, introducing more categories, and strengthening the cold-chain system to preserve quality throughout the journey. Collaborations with sustainable fisheries are also in motion, reinforcing a promise that’s not just to customers, but also to the environment.
